Spring Term
Our learning challenge this term is “How can 5 a day help me to be healthy?” To start this we read ‘Handa’s surprise’ and explored different fruits, some of which we hadn’t seen before. We were able to look inside them, see what they smelt like and enjoyed tasting them.
We will be thinking about the importance of growing, discussing things that we can do now that we couldn’t do five years ago whilst thinking about how baby animal look either similar or different to their parents. We will also be exploring how animal, including humans, survive and how those survival needs are met. In addition to this, we will be investigating the importance of hygiene to prevent the spread of germs. We will conduct some experiments to investigate our topic.
We will learn about the importance of exercise and eating healthily. We will look at the different food groups and in D & T we will design a healthy packed lunch and a dinner menu for friends.
Autumn Term
Our Learning Challenge this term is Science based and focuses on the question ‘What is our school made of?’ We will be identifying and comparing the suitability of a variety of everyday materials. This Learning Challenge will begin by looking at materials within the classroom environment. We will then explore the outside of the school building to identify, name and discuss the suitability of the materials used to build the school. The children will be given the opportunity to experiment with a range of materials in order to change their shape by bending, stretching, squashing and twisting. We will end with each group giving a presentation to the rest of the class on their chosen material. Further Learning Challenge tasks will focus around ‘What was it like in 1953 when the Queen Elizabeth became queen?’ This term the children have the opportunity to work with Durham Music Service.
