Intent
At Escomb Primary School, Science learning is sequential, developing knowledge and embedding skills over time. We recognise the importance of Science in every aspect of daily life and want to inspire a lifelong love of the subject. In our rapidly evolving world, Science encourages a healthy inquisitiveness in children about the marvels and events in the world around them and promotes respect for the living and non-living. We follow the National Curriculum for Science and we aim for our children to:
• develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
• develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
• be equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future
Science at Escomb is designed to connect practical experience with ideas by engaging learners in the scientific process of questioning, hypothesising, testing their ideas using a scientific method and then evaluating their findings.
We intend to develop children’s curiosity, positive attitudes and exploration of the wider local area through establishing links with industry, enrichment projects/partnerships and future career pathways. Opportunities are also presented for the children to develop their reading skills as they consult scientific texts, consolidating their scientific vocabulary as part of this
Implementation
For a child to be a Scientist at Escomb Primary School, we teach Science through a carefully and sequential planned curriculum that continuously builds upon skills and knowledge. Throughout each year group, our planning is focused on the three disciplines and the five working scientifically methods to allow our children to explore and discover. Children are taught weekly Science lessons and are given experiences to retrieve knowledge and skills so that they continue to make alterations to their long-term memory.
We capitalise on the local community and international links formed with and around our school to implement a broad range of cultural enhancements for our children. These links include Children Challenging Industry a partnership with GlaxoSmithKline, Enthuse partnership with UTC, working with STEM Ambassadors to upskill teachers and deliver high quality sessions to motivate and inspire children to achieve in STEM related fields.
Impact
The teaching of Science at Escomb Primary School results in children having a fun, engaging, high quality science education, that provides all children with the necessary understanding of the world around them, which they can take with them onto their next phase of education. Children are able to question and answer their own questions, children can retrieve a wealth of knowledge relating to biology, chemistry and physics and apply it independently using a scientific process. Children’s aspirations of themselves improve as they learn the possibilities of careers within Science as a result of our continuing links with industry and local partners.
