Safety Carousel
Year 6, thoroughly enjoyed their trip to the safety carousel. They took part in 6 workshops, including a talk from the RNLI and a Fire Safety gameshow. They learned how to stay safe online and the importance of not sharing personal information with strangers.

Junior Education: Energy Drinks
Today, we had a lady visit us and speak to us about energy drinks as part of our Junior Education programme. We watch a short clip on the tortoise and the hare and discussed the dangers of energy drinks. We could not believe how much sugar and caffeine was in one drink!
We then got to try on a pair of beer googles will seriously impaired our vision. We even found it difficult to give a high-five.
We have a right to find things out and share what you think with others. (Article 13)
Junior Education: The Dogs Trust
Alison, from the Dogs Trust, came into our class and brought with her Milo (the dog). She spoke to us about how to care for dogs and we had discussions about how we should act around them. We discussed different scenarios and talked about what we would feel like doing and what would be the best thing to do.
We got an understanding of how a dog might be feeling from how it be feeling in certain situations and were made aware of some signs to look out for when approaching a dog. It helped us to be more considerate around dogs and taught us how to be more ‘Dog Smart’.

Junior Education: Jet and Ben
Our Junior Education Programme this week involved us having a visit from Jet and Ben who came along with their handler PCSO Claire Keir and another lady called Rhiannon. We started off by discussing what it’s means to be safe and we explained what we thought a dangerous person might look like. We realised that it doesn’t matter what a person looks like and that anyone could be dangerous whether they look nice or not.
We were then spoken to about the important jobs the dogs have in the police force before getting to meet the dogs and we were even allowed to stroke them. We had another lovely week learning new things.

Junior Education: Civil Contingencies
As part of our Junior Ed programme we had a visitor from Durham County Council to talk to us about civil contingencies. We were taught about what an emergency is and which organisations are involved.
One of our activities involved us working out what items we would pack in a ‘grab bag’ if we were in an emergency. It got us thinking about what we really need and what we could do without if we were ever faced with a serious situation.

Junior Education: Hate Crime
Every Thursday our class will be working with the Police as part of Junior Education Programme ran by their service. Our first workshop Faye tackled the topic of Hate Crime with us and highlighted the difficulties some people face. We also briefly discuss Terrorism. We were able to have an open and honest discussion about the topics, sharing our thoughts and ideas. We learned a lot and are looking forward to next week.
We have a right to a wider range of activities. (Article 31)
First Aid Training
We had a great time learning First Aid with Helen Dent. It was done in a way we could understand and we were taught the steps to take if we saw someone injured using DRABC. We got to put each other in the recovery position told how to call 999 and what information we need to give. We were then shown how to deal with nose bleeds and chocking.
We are hoping we will never have to use any of the techniques but it is good to know we have the knowledge and skills needed if we are in an emergency situation.
We have a right to the best health care possible. (Article 24)
Parliament Week
Year 6 spent Parliament week learning all about our government. We started by forming our own Parliament, debating laws and research the different roles within Parliament.
The week was brought to an end with a visit from Councillor Rob York who gave us a fantastic talk and insight into how parliament works.
The government has a responsibility to make sure our rights are protected so we can grow and reach our full potential. (Article 4)
