Adding money by rounding!
Article 28—Every child has the right to an education.
We have been exploring how to add money by rounding pounds and pence to the nearest pound.
We chose two or three books from our shelves to find the total.
If a two books cost £3.99 and £4.99 then it was better to round them both up by 1p so we were just adding £4 and £5 which would have been £9. We just adjust the total by taking the two pence off that we added when rounding the original price.
If a book cost £5.95 then we rounded up to £6 but then took off the 5p difference.
Exploring 3D shapes and their properties!
Article 28—Every child has the right to an education.
We used cocktail sticks and Play-Doh to create a variety of 3D shapes. The cocktail sticks were the edges and the Play-Doh represented the vertices.
As we created the 3D shapes we worked in pairs to record the number of faces, vertices and edges. All of our shapes had flat faces or straight edges. Some 3D shapes have curved faces and edges like a cylinder, cone or sphere.
Maths—Place Value—Hit the Target game!
Article 28—Every child has the right to an education.
The aim of the game was to explore how you could get as close as possible to a target number by exchanging the place value of some of your numbers by rolling a 0-9 die.
We worked in pairs and wrote a 6 digit number on our boards. The teacher would then reveal a six digit target number and each person had 4 turns to roll a 0-9 die and try to get as close to the target number as possible.
Maths – Decimal Game
Article 28—Every child has the right to an education.
The aim of this maths game was to get three numbers in a row. You had to create a 2 digit decimal number between 0 and 1 after rolling a 0-9 die twice. This was a two player game where you had to think tactically to block your opponent from getting three in a row. Some games went on for a long time while others were over quite quickly! It was the luck of the die!
Maths – Factors Pairs and Bingo
Article 28—Every child has the right to an education.
As part of our work on fractions we played Fraction pairs and Bingo to help find equivalent fractions. It also helped us to reduce some fractions to their simplest form.
Drawing Circles
Article 28—Children have the right to an education.
In Maths we have been exploring circles. We were given the radius of a circle and were asked to draw a circle using a compass. It was tricky to get used to using the compass at first. However, once we had a bit of practice we were finding it easier.
Maths – Factor Line Game
Article 28 – Children have the right to an education.
The aim of this maths game was to get four numbers in a row either horizontally, vertically or diagonally. You could only use the numbers 21, 1, 2 and 3. You could place a number on an identical square, if it was a multiple of that number or if it was a factor of that number. There were quite a few different solutions. 21 was the hardest number to place as it would only fit in a few places! This affected where the other numbers could go.
Northumbria University Maths Challenge
Article 29—your education should help to develop your skills and talents!
This Maths challenge was created by Northumbrian University and was inspired by the Harry Potter films! We had to complete a number of different mathematical tasks to complete the game! We worked in teams and scored points in each round. It was quite difficult but it was a lot of fun!
Doubling and halving game.
Article 28—Every child has the right to an education.
We worked in pairs to multiply and divide by 4 by doubling or halving twice. We gained points for correct answers and challenged ourselves to finding patterns in the numbers we used.
Place Value Game
Article 28—Every child has the right to an education.
The aim of this maths game was to roll a die several times and then to make a number close to a target number. The closest person to the target number was the winner. We got to play a number of rounds.
